If you want to add pop to your crochet design, I mean literal stitches that pop out; you’ll love the popcorn stitch! Using this stitch will not only create great texture in your finished pieces, but you could create a fun textured design in your project!

The popcorn stitch usually abbreviated (pc), is a raised stitch that creates a “cup” of double crochets. You could use any number of double crochets in one stitch to create the ‘pop’ in this stitch. The more double crochets, the more ‘pop’ this stitch makes!

Popcorn Stitch Instructions:

The popcorn stitch usually abbreviated (pc), is a raised stitch that creates a “cup” of double crochets. You could use any number of double crochets in one stitch to create the ‘pop’ in this stitch. The more double crochets, the more ‘pop’ this stitch makes!

To create the popcorn stitch,

    1. Place five double crochets into the same stitch.
    2. Then, you’ll remove your hook from the loop and insert it into the first double crochet you made.
    3. With your hook still in the first double crochet, insert your hook into the loop you dropped.
    4. Tighten the loop around your hook and pull it through the first double crochet.

That’s it!

I won’t list all the ways you could use this stitch because the possibilities are endless! However, don’t keep the popcorn stitch within a particular parameter in your next design. It was meant to be playful. Think more is better!

Another way to add eye-popping texture to your crochet project is to use bobble stitches! Wait! Aren’t popcorn stitches and bobble stitches the same thing? They look a lot alike, but their execution is entirely different.

Bobble Stitch Instructions:

A bobble stitch, usually abbreviated (bo), is another raised stitch that can create playful stitches and a depth of dimension to your fabric. The bobble stitch can be worked in double crochets or half double crochets, which makes it versatile.

To create the bobble stitch,

      1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch.
      2. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
      3. Yarn over and pull through two loops. Don’t finish your double crochet!
      4. Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch.
      5. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
      6. Yarn over and pull through two loops.

Repeat steps 4-6 until you have six loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through all six loops on your hook.

One important thing to remember when working bobble stitches is that they are always worked on the WRONG SIDE of your work. I recommend placing a single crochet before and after the bobble stitch so it looks better. If you use bobble stitches one after another, your fabric will create a messy, cluttered look. The cluster stitch is the last textured crochet stitch we will discuss today. Of all these three stitches, this one is my favorite. The cluster stitch can be worked with any basic stitch, either in a row on in the round! It’s made up of several stitches placed close to one another.

Cluster Stitch Instructions:

These cluster stitches will be linked together to create a unique look. A cluster stitch usually abbreviated (cl), can be worked with multiple numbers of stitches. The name of the cluster stitch will depend on the stitch you use and how many of them you use to create the cluster. Do you need clarification?

If you use three double crochets to create your cluster stitch, you’ll call it a 3 dc cl in your pattern. If you use five half double crochets, you’ll call it a 5 hdc cl.

To create a three double crochet cluster stitch,

Repeat steps 4-6 one more time. Yarn over and draw through all loops on your hook. Close your cluster stitch with a chain one.

When working the cluster stitch in the subsequent rows, be careful to place the cluster stitch in either the top of the cluster from the previous row or the chain one. DO NOT place a cluster stitch in the chain one AND the top of the last cluster. If you do, you’ll increase each row, and your fabric will become wonky!
